Hack @ Craft Coffee

Global e-commerce // amazing coffee experiences

Hi, We're looking for a kickass full-stack Rails developer. Take a second to learn what we're all about. Apply at the bottom.

We're seriously passionate about what we do

Every team member receives tons of great coffee equipment on day 1. We live what we do, and we'd never sell anything to our customers that we didn't personally love. You'll receive everything you see here on the first day of work.

People you respect are totally into us

Technologists, entrepreneurs, food writers, chefs, designers, filmakers. These are just some of the folks who love what we're doing.

"Continuing to be impressed by Craft Coffee. Is it wrong that I'm starting to tell NY tech startups by their attention to design?"

Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit

"New weekend ritual -- grinding @craftcoffee beans in manual grinder & making coffee in a French press."

"They do an excellent job all around -- interesting sources, thoughtfully assembled -- and I really enjoy the element of surprise every month."

Amanda Hesser, author of The Essential NYTimes Cookbook & founder of Food52

"For all you aspiring lawyer-entrepreneurs out there, I just want you to know that we invest in lawyers only if they know how to code like [Craft Coffee founder] Mike Horn!"

Dave McClure, pirate at 500 Startups

"Thought I'd never tweet about food & drink but this is really a public service announcement - go get @craftcoffee now!"

Ondi Timoner, filmmaker (Dig! and We Live in Public), winner of the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize (twice!)

Zach Klein, co-founder of Vimeo, CEO of DIY

"Having a delicious cup of Kenya Kiambara from my @craftcoffee delivery"

Ivy Stark, Executive Chef at Dos Caminos

The Press recognizes that we're doing something special

Sprudge, a leading coffee industry blog, named us Product of the Year for 2012. They said "The very act of opening your Craft Coffee box is a joy, the packaging artful, delicate and neat. The coffees selected therein are consistently surprising, unexpected, and splendid. There's some magic in the air at Craft Coffee."

Our Culture & Our Company

Join us on the vanguard of ecommerce

  • We're focused on metrics, analytics and building an app that innovates around product. You'll be on the vanguard of online commerce. This is not about building yet another shopping cart.
  • Most of the popular commerce startups in NYC right now were founded by MBAs who can't read code. We're different. Our founder codes in Rails.
  • You'll take the lead in developing the product for a global commerce company with paying customers in 47 states and 9 countries around the world.
  • We have an endless supply of the best coffee in the world. Seriously.
  • Scroll through a couple pages of our Blog and Twitter feed to see what we're all about.

The Position

Lead Rails Developer

  • You'll be the first full-time developer at the company.
  • You'll work in Rails 3 with a clean codebase, and integrate with modern APIs.
  • You'll need to be comfortable working on the full stack from frontend to server admin.
  • You'll take occassional breaks to sample some of the best coffees in the world with NYC's top coffee professionals.

Tech

Rails 3; Clean codebase

  • We just migrated the app over to Rails 3.1. Fresh code base with no legacy code.
  • We use Github to host our repos and Capistrano to deploy.
  • We deploy to multiple environments (staging and production) with the capistrano-ext gem.
  • We have strong test coverage in place.

You Should Have

At least 3-5 years of prior experience building web apps.

  • You must have significant experience working in Rails and with JS/JQuery. We understand that talented developers can learn Rails quickly, but as our principal developer we need you to hit the ground running.
  • Experience developing ecommerce sites is a major plus. We've seen many developers underestimate the challenge of commerce. Prior experience with Spree commerce is a plus.

Apply

Please e-mail us at dev@craftcoffee.com, and tell us why you're the right person for the job.

  • We're looking for people who really want to work at Craft Coffee. Not just at a startup. Not just in NYC.
  • To make it past the archive button in Mike's inbox, convince him that you really want to work here.
